FORT COLLINS, COLO. (July 26, 2018) — FORTitude 10K has announced the lineup of professional runners for the USA Pro Chase Race for September’s event.

The FORTitude 10K is in its second year and will take place Sept. 3 in Fort Collins, starting at Elizabeth Street and City Park Avenue and finishing at Canvas Stadium on CSU’s campus.

The Pro Chase Race, which starts at 10:35 a.m., immediately follows the citizens race at the FORTitude 10K, designed so those racers can watch what sets up as an exciting finish inside Canvas Stadium. Last year’s citizens race saw nearly 8,000 participants.

Maggie Callahan and Ian Butler, who won the women’s and men’s USA Pro Chase Race last year in Fort Collins, are both part of the pro field announced Thursday.

“What’s exciting is that we have many of the USA Pro Race Chase veterans returning to race this year, including last year’s winners,” said Don Janicki, FORTitude 10K pro athlete coordinator, in a news release. “For those who ran last year, it will be interesting to see how they strategically adjust their race this year.”

The unique format has every racer with an individual start time projected by his or her projected finish time, based on a database and recent performances. The staggered starts mean that most of the pro racers will finish near the same time, so all racers, even with different times, have a chance to win.

“I loved the format. It was fun to do something totally different in a race, and it worked to my advantage,” Callahan said in a news release. “I started near the front of the field and was running scared the whole race, which is terrific motivation.”

Total prize money for the race is $23,375, with distribution via three categories:

  • Overall order of finish, first through 25th, with first taking $4,000.
  • Men’s and women’s order to finish, first through fifth.
  • Men’s and women’s fastest times, first through fifth.
